Fireplace Mantels

Create a stunning centre piece for your living room with one of our solid wood fireplace mantels, surrounds, beams or lintels. From traditional Oak to warm Elm and contrasting Ash we have the size and shape to suite your fireplace. Whether you are looking for a mantel with a square edge, a natural edge or something in between we will have the perfect piece. Once you have chosen your mantel we can sand and oil it to your preferred finish.

All our wood mantels are kiln dried to a low moisture content. Mantels are exposed to high levels of heat when installed above a fire or wood burning stove. This causes the wood to split and crack which can leave sharp edges in the mantel. By kiln drying our wood we can be confident that any splitting that might occur will have already taken place. We can sand out any sharp edges in our finishing process which means that once installed your mantel will require little attention to keep it looking its best.

Mantel Pricing

Each mantel is individually priced depending on its size and the species of timber. Prices start from £150 for a fully finished average size mantel (1200mm x 180 x 55).

Square EdgeSquare Edge

A popular finish for traditional Oak mantels, beams and lintels, this style works well with large square and rectangular section pieces. The Square Edge finish will also give a contemporary feel to smaller dimension mantel shelves in other timbers including Elm, Ash, Birch, Sycamore and Beech. Any splits and cracks are sanded out and any sharp corners are rounded off. An edge profile can also be added – either a round over or 45 degree chamfer. The surfaces of the mantel are sanded to a smooth finish and 3 coats of finishing oil are applied.

Wire Brushed Natural EdgeWire Brushed Natural Edge

This finish works particularly well with Burr Elm and Pippy Oak mantels and thinner mantel shelves. The natural edge is brushed with a wire brush to remove any bark and loose material. Any sharp points and knots are sanded back and then wire brushed to blend in. The wire brushing keeps a natural look to the mantel and gives a lovely tactile feel. Any splits and cracks are sanded out and any sharp corners are gently rounded off. The surfaces of the mantel are sanded to a smooth finish and 3 coats of finishing oil are applied.

Smooth Natural EdgeSmooth Natural Edge

The natural edge is sanded to a smooth finish with any knots sanded flush. This finish works well with Elm, Sweet Chestnut, Ash and Birch. This finish, like the wire brushed finish, keeps a natural look to the mantel but with a smoother feel. Any splits and cracks are sanded out and any sharp corners are gently rounded off. The surfaces of the mantel are sanded to a smooth finish and 3 coats of finishing oil are applied.

Dovetail KeysDovetail Keys

If a split is particularly big we can make dovetail keys to stitch over the gap. These become a feature in their own right and can be made in contrasting timber as a highlight. Each key is unique and shaped to fit each split by hand. Priced per dovetail key.

Mantel Brackets and Corbels

Supporting brackets or corbels can be made to compliment your mantel. We can make these for you to suite the style of mantel you have chosen. Price is dependent on individual design.

Fitting your Mantel

There are many ways to install a wood mantel depending on its size, shape and weight. We are happy to provide advice on the best method of installation. We also provide a fitting service for surface mounted mantel shelves. If the mantel is to be inset into the chimney breast or requires any structural work we would recommend asking a builder to install the mantel for you.  For floating mantels going against a brick or stone wall we can fix steel rods to the back with resin- £20 for 2 or £24.50 for 3 (for heavier beams).
